The Big Island

Well, after the last blog entry, we were supposed to go on a visit to Alaska, so the kids could see snow, Alaska, and Dad could do some work.  A volcano named Mount Redoubt had other plans, erupting for the first time in 20 years--12 hours before we were supposed to leave.  So, what do we decide to do--go to the Big Island of Hawaii, the only one with an active volcano.  We stayed there for 2 nights, 3 days, and enjoyed it.

Lotta love in a tropical garden for the Harris kids.

Unbelievably pretty, tropical, lush, and really rainy on the Big Island's Windward (East) side.

Adele got to see some of her first waterfalls.  Amazing waterfalls happen about once a mile due to all the rain, and the mountains there.

In Volcano National Park, it was windy, rainy, and amazing.  Check out the lava going into the coast.  This is some of the world's newest land.

Here is a sea arch formed by the lava and the waves.

Nolin and MC telling the lava to stop (or thinking they are superman)

Nolin couldnt believe the lava.  He was mad that there was no rocks/sand to throw there.

The crater for Kilauea with Nolin P.

MC is a volcano fan

Our native Hawaiian Adele was happy to meet Pele for the first time

Got to do some family hiking through the National Park.  Adele dug it!

In a lava tube...this is where lava used to flow through, and you walk through this tunnel for about a half mile.

I call this picture "5 Volcanos"

The steam in the back there is not coming out of Adele's head after a long car ride.  No, that is where the lava is entering the ocean, creating steam.  Too far away to see the lava, but pretty neat nonetheless.

At Mauna Lani resort on the east side of the island.  Meme, Papa, Uncle Phil, and Aunt Cici stayed there about 22 years ago.

We got home at 10:30 pm on friday night, and woke the kids up at 6 am saturday to go do the Ford Island Bridge Walk (Run).  Ford Island is the one in the middle of Pearl Harbor, and was the centerpoint of attacks on December 7th, 1941.  You can see the Arizona Memorial there on the left.

Lotta strollers on the bridge, including us.  Can you believe that Shauna pushed both of these at the same time?  That is the Arizona Memorial behind there, battleship row, and the Missouri is just off the picture in the top right hand corner.

Happy Baseball season, the Braves and Red Sox are undefeated!  I smell World Series.  Happy 5th Birthday to Cousin Jackson Riddle today too!
